By popular demand we are returning to Cadogan Hall!  Jan has managed to book 50 seats for this popular concert, all the seats are in the stalls apart from 5 that are in the gallery.  Tickets will be on sale either in person at our July lecture or online through the Summer.  Last date for booking Wednesday 1 October.  Included coach travel from Marlow will arrive in plenty of time for you to enjoy Sloane Square and to have lunch before the concert starts at 3pm.   

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s much-loved Christmas Cracker concert returns to Cadogan Hall.  Featuring your favourite Christmas songs and a selection of sing-along carols, it’s the perfect way to get your festive season off to a joyful start.  The Orchestra is very pleased to be joined by conductor Stephen Bell, alongside special guest vocalists, Katie Birtill and Oliver Tompsett, for this magical Yuletide celebration that is guaranteed to fill you with festive cheer.
 
This concert is extremely popular, but we have managed to acquire 50 tickets.  A coach will be provided from Court Garden in Marlow; Cadogan Hall is located just off Sloane Square and there are many cafes and restaurants there for you to choose to enjoy lunch before the concert.  The tickets we have acquired are in different blocks of the hall and we have 37 tickets where the price of the trip, inclusive of the coach, will be £54 with 13 at a reduced price of £40.  The acoustics at the Cadogan Hall are superb so a great concert is guaranteed.

Your committee hope you and your friends will join us on a trip to the Sargent and Fashion exhibition at Tate Britain on the 29th February.  
This exhibition opens a week before our visit and tours internationally. It focuses on fashion, identity and painting. 

3 reasons for booking are :-
-    An exciting collaboration between the Tate and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston – we will see major portraits from America that rarely travel. 
-    Almost 60 of Sargent’s paintings will be on display, with some partnered with the period garments worn. 
-    We have a 1 hour lecture (exclusive for Groups) - a great introduction, especially as the Tate tell me there will be no audio guide. 

Sargent used fashion as a powerful tool to express identity and personality. He regularly chose the outfits of his collaborators or manipulated their clothing. This innovative use of costume was central to his artwork – for example, tugging a heavy coat tighter around a man to emphasise his figure or letting a dress strap sensuously slip from a woman’s shoulder. 

This trip will include coach transport from Marlow Court Garden, a one hour lecture and entrance to the exhibition. You will have time for a coffee before the lecture and can enter the gallery at your leisure and enjoy the rest of the collection and lunch before the return journey to Marlow Court Garden.

This exhibition follows the romance and radicalism of the Rossetti generation, through and beyond the Pre-Raphaelite years:Dante Gabriel, Christina and Elizabeth (nee Siddal). The Rossettis’ approach to art, love and lifestyles are considered revolutionary, and this is explored in an immersive show, using spoken poetry, drawings, paintings, photography, design and more. This is the first retrospective of Dante Gabriel Rossetti at Tate and the largest exhibition of his iconic pictures in two decades.  It is the most comprehensive exhibition of Elizabeth Siddal’s work for 30 years, featuring rare surviving watercolours and important drawings.

The Rossettis will take a fresh look at the fascinating myths surrounding the unconventional relationships between Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Elizabeth Siddal, Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris.

This trip will include coach transport from Marlow Court Garden, a one hour lecture and entrance to the exhibition. You will have time for a coffee before the lecture and can enter the gallery at your leisure and enjoy the rest of the collection before the return journey to Marlow Court Garden.
 

Wander the new trail

Wander the new enchanting trail around the garden and see some of Wisley’s iconic sights in a new and dazzling light. Go past the Jellicoe Canal and old Laboratory, through Wisteria Walk and the Glasshouse, and experience a magical spectacle of lights with music and fire to add to the drama.

This Sunday afternoon/evening trip will include coach transport from Marlow Court Garden, time to browse the Wisley Gardens in the afternoon, enjoy a Cream Tea, then stroll the well-marked Light Trail at your own pace, which takes about an hour to complete. There will then be time for shopping before the return journey to Marlow Court Garden.

We would like to make a visit to the Royal Opera House following the Special Interest Day in February. Our hope is to visit behind the scenes and do the auditorium tour which focuses on the architecture and the story of the current theatre, with tales of famous opera singers, and see the royal retiring room. Unfortunately as the ROH is currently closed due to Covid, we are still unable to make a definite booking, but we will keep you informed.

Blenheim Palace - cancelled

With all the uncertainty around Covid 19, we regret it has not been possible to book the proposed visit to Blenheim Palace, as we feel that what they are able to offer at the moment would not meet the requirements of our members. Perhaps their themed Christmas will be something for another year? In the meantime we are hopeful of a visit elsewhere and will keep you informed via Mailchimp.

A visit to Coventry Cathedral

VISIT  TO  ROYAL  HOSPITAL  CHELSEA

Sitting on the banks of the River Thames is one of Sir Christopher Wren's masterpieces, The Royal Hospital Chelsea.  Founded in 1682 by Charles II this historic building has been providing a home for army veterans ever since.  Discover more about the history behind this unique national institution by coming with TAS Marlow on a guided walking tour of the Royal Hospital led by a resident Chelsea Pensioner.  We will explore the famous Wren Chapel and Great Hall. Gain an insight into 17th century life and hear first hand what life is like for the iconic Chelsea Pensioners.
We plan to arrive in time for you to buy something to eat in the very reasonably priced coffee shop before the tour starts, and we should leave at about 16.30.

The Arts Society High Wycombe is running a coach trip to the above exhibition and The Arts Society Marlow is being offered the opportunity to join (subject to spaces)

The coach will be leaving from the High Wycombe Hub (Handicross Waitrose) at 9.30 returning by 17.00 (traffic permitting).

There will be a 45-60 minute guided tour of the gallery permanent collection and brief introduction to the Rembrandt exhibition followed by the opportunity for independent exploration.

We aim to spend 3-4 hours there to allow time for lunch which can be bought in the gallery café. 

The cost will be £28 pp. (£4pp reduction for Art Fund members)

George Stubbs: ‘all done from Nature’

This Exhibition presents the first significant overview of this renowned 18th century artist-scientist in Britain for more than 30 years. It brings together 80 paintings, drawings and publications from the National Gallery’s portrait of the stallion ‘Whistlejacket’ to some pieces never previously seen in public.

Both the gallery and this Exhibition have had outstanding reviews in the national press.

Included in this visit is an hour’s lecture in the Sky Room given by the MKGallery Director, Anthony Spira. He will set this new, and already successful, new project in the architectural and artistic context of the development of Milton Keynes, before introducing us to George Stubbs and the selection of his art currently on display.

Our coach will leave Marlow Pound Lane Car Park at 9.30, then High Wycombe Park & Ride at 9.45.

On arrival at the Gallery coffee & biscuits will be served in the Sky Room.

Lecture starts at 11.30 followed by free flow visit to the exhibition.

We do hope that you will join us for our Summer Lunch which is a Thames river cruise from Higginson Park with included cold buffet lunch, as well at tea or coffee.  Other soft or alcoholic drinks will be available to buy.

The boat will be moored at Higginson Park with boarding from 12.15pm, departure around 12.45 and return around 4.30pm.

The cost of all inclusive ticket is £28.00 and this is open to members, waiting list members and guests.

WE REGRET THAT WE HAVE HAD TO CANCEL THIS VISIT 

Our Summer excursion follows on from the March lecture "Inspired by Stonehenge",  and on 19th June we will pay a visit to Salisbury Plain to see the new Stonehenge  Visitor Centre and be taken on a ten minute trip on the shuttle bus out to the famous Stones where we will have time to stroll around them if we wish.

Following time for lunch in Salisbury we will enjoy a guided tour of Arundells, the charming and peaceful home of former Prime Minister, Sir Edward Heath, for a guided tour of this elegant house within Salisbury's magnificent Cathedral Close. Inside the house we will have an opportunity to view Sir Edward's diverse and very personal collection of art work, photographs, sailing memorabilia and political cartoons.  There will be sufficient time to see his garden and/or perhaps wander round the Close before departing for home.

On Thursday 21 February we will visit Leighton House in Kensington,  former home of Victorian artist, Frederic, Lord Leighton.  It is the only purpose built studio house open to the public in the U.K. and contains a fascinating collection of paintings and sculpture by Lord Leighton and his contemporaries.  We will also see the Arab Hall with its golden dome and intricate mosaics and walls lined with beautiful Islamic tiles.  Many of the most prominent figures of the age were visitors to the house, including Queen Victoria. 

After lunch we will be taken by coach to Kensington Palace - home to members of the Royal Family since 1789 when William III and Mary II chose it for their country retreat.  Over the years, Stuart and Georgian monarchs transformed the Palace into a fashionable home for Britain's young royal families.  Queen Caroline shaped the palace and gardens and Queen Victoria spent her childhood here.  More recent inhabitants include Diana, Princess of Wales, Princess Margaret and currently TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children and TRH The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

On Wednesday 24th October we will have a guided tour of Henry Moore's former home Hoglands in Hertfordshire, and his studios and gardens which showcase over 20 of his iconic sculptures in a beautiful setting.  You can lunch (optional) in his favourite pub and then visit the Aisled Barn where the artist's unique tapestries are displayed.  You may even wish to buy yourself a memento from the Visitor Centre Shop!

A  guided visit  to Arundel Castle followed by a guided tour of Arundel Cathedral.  There will also be time for lunch or a walk around the gardens.  

Arundel Castle was first built in 1067 by Roger De Montgomery.   It has been the home of the Dukes of Norfolk for 850 years.  The restored Stately Home of the Duke of Norfolk is a wonderful step back in history.  A Castle steeped in treasures dating back to the Norman Conquest, with  magnificent gardens which we will be guided through.

It is followed by a visit to Arundel Cathedral - a fine Cathedral in French Gothic style

Apsley House & The Wellington Arch

Apsley House had the address of No1 London & was built by Nash in the 1770’s.It  was bought by the the Duke of Wellington for his London home in 1817 after his victories in the Napoleonic wars.

An excellent example of a Regency home filled with treasures installed by the Duke, making for a wonderful visit.

Wellington Arch offers views over the Royal parks & has an exhibition dedicated to the Battle of Waterloo.

Spencer House & The Royal Academy

Monday November 27 2017  

We start  at Spencer House with Coffee & Biscuits served by the Butler followed by  A  guided visit of the Mansion, built in the 18tCentury by Earl Spencer, fully restored to its former magnificence with wonderful displays of Art & Furniture.

Then to the Royal Academy for the Jasper Johns Exhibition  An artist regarded as one of the most important of the 20th Century.

We end with a trip up Regent Street to view the Christmas Lights.
