Cultural Capitals of the Baltics

Tuesday 14 - Sunday 19 October 2025

Tallinn & Riga

We are safely back from our two centre tour of Estonia and Latvia, tucked away on the shores of the Baltic Sea, where both countries despite foreign domination notably by Tsarist & Soviet Russia and Germany, have retained their individuality and unique architecture.

We explored narrow streets, gabled roofs, towers & spires; medieval city walls, castles & gates. Seeing two UNESCO recognised cities and in Riga what is considered by many to be the finest collection of Art Nouveau architecture in the world.

The fully illustrated colour brochure and practical details, is still available on this website - go to the 'Our Society' tab above and then 'Documents'

Comfortable hotels, informative gulies, excellent food, good weather abnd on time flights helped create a wonderfully memorable experience  A good time was had by all.

Suffolk in the Springtime

Monday 12 – Friday 16 May 2025
4 nights/5 days

With comfortable coach travel from Marlow and with limited walking, we organised a less strenuous tour that appealed to those of our members giving airports a miss and looking to enjoy more of the history and culture in the beautiful countryside of the UK.

Incorporating many different aspects of ‘The Arts’, History took us to the Grade 1 listed Layer Marney Tower, England’s tallest Tudor Gatehouse; Architecture was incorporated on our short walking tour of Bury St Edmunds with its 13C Guildhall and 1000 year old St Edmundsbury Cathedral; Art was everywhere but particularly at Constable’s Flatford Mill & Bridge Cottage in the heart of Dedham Vale, as well as The Munnings Museum, and Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich which houses the largest collection of Constable & Gainsborough paintings outside London. Archaeology with Sutton Hoo’s(NT) world-famous Anglo-Saxon burial ground, and music by Benjamin Britten & Peter Pears’ Red House, for over 20 years their former home and studio in the 16C fishing village of coastal Aldeburgh. And finally gardens, from the 1,800 acres of idyllic ‘Capability Brown’ parkland at Ickworth House(NT) to award-winning  plantswoman Beth Chatto’s inspirational space.

Our accommodation was different from usual, but staying at the Ufford Park Hotel in 120 acres of park-land … yes, a golf course! Included dinner each evening provided the opportunity to get to know our fellow travellers better and to be able to enjoy the hotel’s leisure facilities including an indoor swimming pool & spa, bar and outdoor terraces.

The fully illustrated brochure is still available to view on this website - go to 'Our Society' table above and then 'Documents.

Monday, 14 October 2024
Trieste, Italy & Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Monday 14 - Friday 18 October 2024.
2 countries for the price of 1
Trieste, Italy & Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Travelling on BA from Heathrow, here was a great opportunity to explore one of Italy’s least visited areas, tucked away in the far Northeast of the country. With fascinating history, a fusion of styles and culture, dramatic alpine landscapes, glittering Adriatic coastline and wonderful wine and cuisine, this unique area had much to savour and explore.

Whilst staying in Trieste, we also visited Ljubljana, the cultural, educational, political and administrative capital of Slovenia, on the trade route between the Adriatic Sea and the Danube region but just 80 kms from Trieste.

To see the full itinerary please see our illustrated brochure with practical details, go to the Our Society tab and click on Documents.

Krakow - Culture & Christmas

Monday 27 November - Friday 1 December 2023

4 nights/5 days … which became 5 nights/6 days!!

Originally planned as 3 nights/4 days, BA’s Heathrow Winter rescheduling gave 28 TAS members and friends an extra night in the 3* Leonardo Boutique Hotel, conveniently within easy walking distance of the main sights.

With more relaxed timings and our terrific guide Ania, we enjoyed included visits to all the major attractions in Krakow’s Old Town ... the 14C University & Museum, the Gothic Church of St Mary to see the noon opening of the magnificent gilded alter-piece, a walk round the largest medieval square in Europe, and other highlights. Snow fell to order on our first evening and Wawel Castle & Cathedral were simply magical the following day.

An optional visit to Auschwitz was sobering and thought provoking for the smaller group of 19, whilst those ‘staying home’ variously visited the stunning Czartoryski Museum if only to see Leonardo’s ‘Lady with an Ermine’ masterpiece, browsed the Christmas markets and/or relaxed with a mulled wine or cherry vodka.

The planned last day’s visits to the astonishing Royal Salt Mines and the Kazimierz Jewish District with the Remuh and Old Synagogues, proved to be well … our penultimate day! Quite a long story involving more snow, diverted flights, a closed airport and a complementary extra night’s comfortable hotel bed and breakfast, saw us actually land back at Heathrow 24 hours later than expected. Phew!! We were ready to be home, but humour, camaraderie, warmth, care and companionship of friends got us home safe and sound.

The fully illustrated brochure and practical details are still available to view on this website under the 'Documents' tab.

Northern Italy

Northern Italy

04/10/2022 - 08/10/2022

4nights/5days

With travel by BA from Heathrow to Venice and staying at the 4* Hotel Internazionale in Bologna, having kept our fingers firmly crossed, our twice postponed and much anticipated tour eventually took off on 4 October 2022.

And what a tour it was! Any one of the five towns visited … Padua, Bologna, Ravenna, Parma and Ferrara … could have occupied us for several days in themselves, but instead we packed into 5 days a tour that most ‘normal’ folks would easily take two weeks to complete!

Giotto’s 14C Scroveni Chapel frescoes in Padua on day 1; Giambologna’s monumental 16C bronze Neptune fountain, 12C gigantic leaning towers, 13C onwards art work in the National Gallery, a 17C Anatomy Theatre in day 2’s Bologna; stunning glittering World Heritage 6C Roman mosaics as well as 5C Byzantine stone floor mosaics in Ravenna on day 3; Correggio’s 12C illusionist fesco cupola in the cathedral sitting beside an 13C octagonal pink marble baptistery, decorated with any mythical creature and biblical scene you might imagine, occupied Palma on day 4 and, hardly stopping for breath, by day 5 our final visits explored the world of the 14C Este family in Ferrara and in particular their summer palace, The Schifanoia Palace, it’s frescoes and treasures. Wow and phew!!

But all the while having time to browse a gift shop or two, and stop for restorative coffees and pastries, a lunch here and there with delicious Parma ham, salamis and a glass of wine, speciality mint coffee and of course homemade pasta as it should be served .. with butter and parmesan!

And how fortunate were we with our fabulous guide Nathalie! She worked tirelessly for us, introducing and describing the area from any and every subject and angle; her knowledge, energy and enthusiasm were astounding.

The brochure and practical details are still available to view on the website under Documents.
